Job Summary

Main Purpose of Role

This is factory-based role to work as a competent Taper and jointer in a production environment to manufacture sustainable timber framed modular homes. This will include filling and applying relevant tapes to all internal joints in Rigidur boards on walls and ceilings using tooling such as mud boxes, banjos and sometimes by hand if required. Working methodically and in a processed manner to ensure drying times are allowed for so that other operatives and trades can commence work at more convenient times.

The job itself is that of a construction skill. With that said, the role will require you to demonstrate that competency but also support in creating that perfect blend between construction and manufacturing. While the business is growing at a rapid rate, flexibility and open-mindedness to adapt manufacturing principles and standard processes into your roles and responsibilities is a must.

The specific work carried out will always be based on project specific details and have an associated drawing or standard detail to follow. For example, some projects or locations in modules will require a paper tape where as others may require metal cornered tapes. Some projects specify an internal timber window reveal but some may require a boarded, taped and jointed reveal. The type of material/adhesive may also vary based on project specification, for example we may use Easy-fill or an alternative such as Smartmix.

Tasks will be set daily by your team leader to give direction on current target/module rate per shift, modules to be worked on/completed, update your team leader or relevant team leader delegate on work progress, liaise with your peers (other operatives and trades) to ensure there is a smooth flow of work that include work carried out by others, raise any concerns or issues regarding health and safety, quality, materials, tooling and equipment.

Key Responsibilities and Authority

  • Adhere to all of TopHat’s Health and Safety policies and procedures, risk assessments and standard operating procedures relevant to the tasks you have been asked to carry out.
  • Be willing to share your knowledge and experience with other employees.
  • Required to assist and help other operatives and trades in other areas of production including none-tape and jointer tasks.
  • Work alongside other departments such as the design and technical teams to assist in new project implementation, process/cost improvements and improve quality standards.
  • To be able to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Mixing and preparation of fillers and adhesives.
  • Filling of staple lines, screw/fixing holes and any defects in internal Rigidur boards.
  • Applying taped joints over all board joints in walls and ceilings for our internal finish.
  • Using equipment such as various sized mud boxes and banjos to apply filler and tape to the joints.
  • Installing paper Aquabeads and/or metal beading to form external corners of internal walls.
  • To be able to identify defects and snag own work if required. 
  • Using Long sanders to sand down all filler and tapes to prepare for painting.
  • To be able to adhere to TopHat’s quality standards and follow any standard operation procedures related to tiling. To be able to adhere to the same standards in any other work that you are asked to carry out in production.

Qualifications - Essential

  • GSCE Maths & English grade C or equivalent

Qualifications - Desirable

  • Level 2 NVQ in Dry Lining Finishing

Skills and Experience - Essential

Minimum 12 months in a tape and jointing/dry lining finishing role.

Skills and Experience - Desirable

Previous Modular housing experience.

This position is on a fixed term basis of 3 to 6 months.
